For light I go directly to the Source of light, not to any of the reflections. - Peace Pilgrim

Spiritual Direction

One day a lobster is playing in the water. He notices that his shell feels a little tight. Like he's ready for a change. He finds a safe place, under a rock or in a crevice, and sheds his shell. During the stage when he is naked without a shell, the lobster is a wormy sort of creature, vulnerable to predators and to strong currents that could dash him against a rock. In order to grow, the lobster must risk its very life. Soon the new shell grows and the lobster eats the old one for dinner. He returns to his lobster-mates in the sea and is playing once again.
Sound familiar? Probably not. But we do the same thing.

There are times when we just feel out of place in our surroundings. The circumstances of our lives change, either by our own choosing or out of our control. We are on the precipice of something new, and we don't even recognize ourselves. Spiritual direction can help us to reconnect with a sense of belonging in the world. The energy that makes the trees grow is the same force that pulls us through.

Spiritual direction is an invitation for you to explore and tell your unique sacred story, through a process of inquiry. Based on where you are, I can also offer suggestions of sacred practices and readings from different faith traditions that may be helpful to you on your journey. Spiritual direction sessions happen about once a month for a specified period of time. If you are in the NYC area, we can meet face to face, and in some cases I also offer sessions by telephone.

Sitting down together in quiet space, we make room for inner wisdom to unfold. Spiritual direction exists in a context that emphasizes growing closer to the Divine, in whatever form makes sense for you. It is the process of accompanying people on a spiritual journey and is not psychotherapy, or counseling.

When you have come to the edge of all the light you have,
And step into the darkness of the unknown,
Believe that one of two things will happen to you -
Either you'll find something solid to stand on,
Or you'll be taught how to fly! - Richard Bach
